This volume of Justin Law's game review, I will be giving a review about the video game titled, Left 4 Dead.
Left 4 dead, (As I will now call it L4D) is a zombie cooperative first person shooter, in which you and four other players, (Locally or over Xbox Live) go through four different campaigns and try to overcome endless zombies in a effort to escape. It's either stick together to survive or you're zombie food! There are different modes you can play, including: Versus, Single Player, and cooperative. Now I know these might not seem like a lot but trust me, the game has extremely good replay value! You can play it for hours and not get the slightest hint of boredom running through your veins.
CAMPAIGN: First things first: The AI director in this game is absolutely and positively amazing. Unlike other games that include horribly stupid AI that won't react no matter what you do. If you get Incapacitated during the middle of a firefight with zombies, either Louis, Bill, Zoey, or Francis will instantly come to your rescue and pick you up! The four different campaign's in Left 4 Dead are a pretty decent length of play time. The lack of weapons in the game might halter your choice in buying it, but don't let it do such a thing. The game is amazing even without the wide variety of weapons, (You'll learn that as you blast off a round of zombie's heads with an Assault Rifle)
The four different Campaign's are: No Mercy", an urban setting; "Death Toll", a small-town and countryside setting; "Dead Air", an airport setting; and "Blood Harvest", a woodland and farm setting. The levels are essentially linear, with distinct beginnings and ends, but there are a number of alternate routes to follow with more supplies, helping to create a sense of non-linearity. Each one is extremely fun and you will find various ways to get through without hurting your other team-mates in the progress
VERSUS MODE: In Versus mode, four additional players can take control of the Boss Infected (apart from the Witch, which remains computer-controlled), which are randomly assigned to them each time they spawn. While in Spawn Mode, Infected players can quickly roam around the map in search of an appropriate place to spawn. This location must be at a certain distance from any Survivor, must be out of the line of sight of any Survivor, and must be outside restricted areas such as safe rooms. When a "Tank"—the strongest Infected—is about to spawn, Infected players receive a message indicating which player will control it. The Infected have the ability to see Survivors through the walls every time a Survivor runs, talks, or fires a weapon—a Survivor who remains quiet by crouching or walking instead of running gradually fades from the Infected's vision. The Infected can also see in the dark, unlike the Survivors. Pathways exclusive to the Infected are marked with symbols for the Infected players. These can be climbed and used for ambushes, especially with the Infected's immunity to falling damage. Versus mode is only playable in the "No Mercy" and "Blood Harvest" campaigns.
Throughout a Versus campaign, each group of four players plays each chapter of the campaign as both Survivor and Infected, swapping sides once per chapter. At the end of each chapter, the team playing the Survivors earns points based on how well they performed, multiplied by the chapter's difficulty level and how many Survivors reached the safe room. If all of the Survivors die before they reach the safe room, then the team is awarded points according to the average distance traveled to the safe room. Once again: The four boss zombies you can play as:
Including the tank, are:) the Hunter, an agile Infected that can pounce on Survivors from a great distance; the Smoker, an Infected that ensnares Survivors with its long tongue at a distance and, upon death, releases a cloud of smoke; the Boomer, a bloated Infected whose vomit and bile blind the player and attract the Horde.
FINAL VERDICT OF THE GAME: 5/5 = A MUST BUY
